A fictionalized version of Larry Walters story was the basis for the musical The Flight of the Lawn Chair Man which played in Philadelphia in 2000.

On July 2nd 1982 33 year-old Larry Walters tied 42 helium-filled weather balloons to a Sears lawnchair and floated up over 16000 feet above Los Angeles. In 1982 Larry Walters achieved his life long dream to fly when he attached some weather balloons to his lawn chair. While hanging in his chair in the lines he was only 5 feet from the ground where he jumped into the waiting arms of the Long Beach police and several federal officials.

Lawrence Richard Walters nicknamed Lawnchair Larry or the Lawn Chair Pilot April 19 1949 October 6 1993 was an American truck driver who took flight on July 2 1982 in a homemade airship. His story however inspired a generation of lawn chair piloting balloonists. The plan was simple.
Fortunately Larry had already popped enough balloons to begin slowly drifting back to earth. Larry hiked into the forest and shot himself on October 6 1993. He enjoyed intermittent demand as a motivational speaker but said he never made much money from his innovative flight.
He eventually landed in power lines near Long Beach California creating a blackout for 20 minutes. Larry Walters who achieved dubious fame in 1982 when he piloted a lawn chair attached to helium balloons 16000 feet above Long Beach has committed suicide. Sadly Lawnchair Larry committed suicide in 1993.
